How You Can Help
An Initiative of the Community Foundation For Southeastern Michigan
Overview
Through the GreenWays Initiative, the Community Foundation has provided two types of grants to assist 501(c)(3) organizations and government agencies in planning and building greenways to connect people and communities throughout the region. All grants were made on a competitive basis. The following is a brief overview of the GreenWays Initiative grantmaking program. Each grant type is described fully in the GreenWays Initiative Grantmaking Guidelines. Please note, the GreenWays Initiative is no longer making competetive grants. The last round of grants were awarded in April of 2006.

GreenWays Predevelopment Grants - Grants for predevelopment activities such as engineering studies, design, activities to increase collaboration between program participants, final planning work, or hiring technical experts or project-related staff. These predevelopment grants support specific activities that occur in the final-phase planning prior to actual, in-ground construction or implementation. GreenWays Predevelopment Grants range from $5,000 to $100,000.

GreenWays Land Grants - Grants for the physical creation of greenways, including in-ground construction, restoration of habitat, planting of native species, trail construction, waterfront restoration, reinstatement of the natural values of a specific location and land purchase. GreenWays Land Grants range from $25,000 to $1 million and require matching government and/or private funding at a minimum of $2 (government/private) for every $1 of GreenWays funds. For information on other potential funding sources, visit our Resources section.
